This app is the perfect guide for coaches and mentors to keep handy so its always with you when you need inspiration.

A core function of developmental coaching and mentoring is that it helps people with the quality of their thinking about issues that are important to them. One of the ways effective coaches/mentors do this is to ask powerful questions – questions that oblige the learner to engage with different perspectives on their issues.

Powerful questions for coaches and mentors has been designed by Prof. David Clutterbuck, one of the pioneers of modern mentoring and coaching. Prof. Clutterbuck has researched widely into the nature of questioning in developmental partnerships, with assistance of colleagues around the world.

How to use this app

Each of the situations in this app has been selected because it occurs frequently, or is relatively difficult to address when it does occur, or both. We recommend that you use the app in the following ways:

• To generally build your confidence so that you have a way forward when your coachee or mentee seems stuck
• To prepare for coaching and mentoring conversations when you know a particular issue is going to arise
• To share with a coachee or mentee during a meeting, to agree together which questions will be most helpful and insight provoking in the moment
• To reflect on coaching and mentoring conversations and identify different ways of tackling similar situations, as they arise in the future

For each of the more than 70 situations, we provide 5-15 questions that will help you help your clients, along with a short description of how to approach the issues within that scenario.
